Gear Change. A series by James Price. Fast information for when your time is poor, and you know the best time for change is now.

This series provides insight and advice with a focus on improving productivity and sustainability for aged care providers in Australia. A series that you can squeeze in during your lunch hour and then share the ideas with the rest of your team in the afternoon.

Or is that the management of measurement?

Either way we can’t manage what we can’t measure.

This was a favourite quote of mine for years. Recently, I read a different version and being that it was quoted by a very famous person – well it must be true!

“What gets measured gets accomplished, without out measurement you’re fooling yourself”

The quote is by Dan Pena who is a High Performance Executive Success Coach (and a 74 year old American businessman).

We all know this to be true, or at least it resonates with us all in some way. Sadly we are faced with situations where we run business processes and we can’t measure them as well as we might like.

One of the biggest challenges we have heard about recently is the visibility of staff costs in real-time.  I haven’t spoken to anyone of late who can see their costs in anything close to real-time and they have to wait until payroll runs before the data is available to build a management report.  This is often as a consequence of the wage rules and rates living in the payroll application or not accurately configured in the roster system.

To me, this would be like driving a car down the freeway without a speedometer. You know the speed limits and you know how fast your car can go but you rely on the speed camera to notify you with a speeding ticket if you have exceeded the limit. Quite a terrifying prospect for most motorists and on reflection a scary prospect for anyone responsible for 70% of a businesses expenditure!

We co-designed Mirus Works! to incorporate an award engine which enables you to predict staff costs and report on actuals in real time. Real Measurement. Better Management. No tickets. It’s called Mirus Works!

It actually does. Please contact us to discuss further.

James Price, co-founder at Mirus Australia is a self-confessed petrol head. That is a person who is overly reliant on the use of their car and enjoys making a noise with it. James frequently shares a car analogy to explain a methodology, complex problem or an idea that has formed and with the goal of #makingagedcarebetter
