The Aged Care Efficiency Index
The sector scores 6.3 out of 10. Here's where it comes from.
FY26 was the first full financial year of the reformed system, and it shows a sector that is very good at what reform aimed at and still losing money on everything around it. Provision of care earned around $22,879 per resident per annum, while hotel services and accommodation lost $4,595. The care margin is carrying the building.
Edition 2 is the first to be calculated line by line from a published scoring methodology, using sector data for the quarter ended 30 June 2026. Analysis and scoring are by Tyler Fisher, Head of Data and Insights. Every score can be reproduced from the figures in the report, and no individual provider is identified.
The report ends with the question every board will ask: how do we compare? Mirus Benchmarking answers part of it for free, setting your average daily subsidy, occupancy and casemix against more than 130 providers.
The Aged Care Efficiency Index includes:
- The FY26 scoreboard. Financial sustainability, clinical quality, resourcing and consumer satisfaction, each scored out of ten, with the Edition 1 ratings for orientation.
- Where the margin is made. Care and accommodation scored as separate business units, and why the sector's result rests on care subsidy.
- The compliance and quality gap. Why clinical quality scores well on compliance rather than on measured outcomes.
- Care minutes as a revenue line. How a roster shortfall now costs a home twice: in its staffing star and in its funding two quarters later.
- The sector's view against the arithmetic. How sector leaders rated themselves in September, set against the calculated scores.
- Questions for the board in FY27. One set for each pillar.
